August 2006 - Letter from the Head of School

Dear Parents,

The first week of school is behind us and I believe we have had a smooth and effective start. Of course the unexpected always comes along and then it is time for flexibility, humor, and courtesy. This applies especially to the drop-off and pick-up traffic in the morning and afternoon - please do not cut lines, do not park and leave cars unattended in the drop-off zones, and make sure your children enter and leave the car without delays. Good order and mutual respect will make life easier for everyone!  A “DO’S AND DON’T’S” SET OF REGULATIONS IS GIVEN BELOW.

Several projects have now been completed - the new entrance and guardhouse are receiving final touches, the gymnasium floor is working out well, and the playgrounds of the elementary and OECC will soon have their final look as well. The surface for the outdoor basketball courts will be installed within the next month or two, weather permitting and after the installation of a new asphalt surface that will have a proper drainage slope and on which a multi-purpose synthetic surface will be placed, making it more usable and safe.

We have good news on the search for a school nurse. Starting in early September Mrs. Betzaida Rivera will join the Baldwin staff as our school nurse. Mrs. Rivera is fully certified and comes to us with experience in schools and at university level. She will have responsibility for all health matters such as First Aid, participation in health teaching and wellness, record keeping, and cooperation with staff, students and families about basic health requirements. An INFIRMARY is being established in the “glorieta” building next to the administration.

The new cafeteria provider, Mr. Uribe and his team, are off to a good start after some initial logistical challenges. Students are eating salads, drinking plenty of water and are in general adapting well to a stronger emphasis on good nutrition. The service has also been very helpful in supporting the special events at the beginning of the school year.

One of those events was the KICK-OFF meeting of the PTO on August 17 th attended by many volunteers ready to help with the many programs the PTO is planning throughout the year. I want to thank Tish Grosek and her team for a vigorous and enthusiastic start and ask you to support them in their endeavors. If you did not have a chance to attend this first meeting, please do contact them and volunteer whatever time you can give. Shared tasks are accomplished with greater satisfaction and success.

Finally, I urge you all to join us in the Back-to School Nights, which are scheduled as follows:

·    ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (1 ST-6 TH)                       THURSDAY, AUGUST 24 TH @ 7:00 PM

·    MS/US         (7 TH-12 TH)                               THURSDAY, AUGUST 31 ST @ 7:00 PM

·    O.E.C.C. (PK-K)                                        THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 TH @ 7:00 PM

I look forward to seeing many of you at these occasions and extend best wishes for a continued good start into this school year 2006/7. For events and news please be sure to frequently check the Baldwin website at www.baldwin-school.org.  For example, the PTO Innisbrook Kick-off on August 18 th is captured in a special picture album – please join in this important fundraiser.
