The following are the Professional Standards for The Baldwin School of Puerto Rico
EMPATHY
To listen, understand and experience what others are going through.
Structure a classroom environment that responds to the individual needs of our students (walk around, put up information on the walls, display their work).
Give up control -some of the time- and listen to value their contributions.
Teach to different intelligences and learning styles to reach each individual child so that they feel empowered.
Know the students* needs so each one feels important.
Be a role model, be aware of your body language; watch what you say.
Set limits with respect, dignity and fairness. Students need to feel safe but you cannot let them take advantage of you.
Be consistent and establish consequences.
Be open-minded, appreciate differences.
Be accessible, teaching does not stop at 3:00, sit with students during lunch.
ACTIVE LEARNING
To create a variety of methods that support the idea that students learn differently
Turn more of the learning process over to the child.
Give students control of what they learn (brainstorm with students the topic of the day and conduct class discussion in accordance to ideas).
Provide hands-on activities.
Work in vertical teams with teachers.
RESPECT
To create a comfortable environment so all students and teachers can show their uniqueness.
Talk about problems and come up with solutions together (talk to the situation, not the character or personality).
Enhance their special abilities to create a good self-esteem and a comfortable environment.
Handle problems privately (not in front of the whole class).
Choose appropriate tone (be aware of body language).
Learn how to be patient.
Celebrate uniqueness.
Ask questions, value opinions and delegate.
Create a comfortable environment (model respect *Show me how and I will follow*).
FAIRNESS
To have our bodies, our thoughts, our feelings and our property treated respectfully
Fully inform the students of the rules and classroom expectations.
Provide an example of fairness by being fair to them.
Conduct the class objectively when dealing with difficult situations. Exercise a rotating class court to promote learning how to find solutions fairly.
Be consistent everywhere!
KNOWLEDGE
To have command of subject matter and anticipate difficulties students may have in comprehending the lesson.
Know your subject in depth.
Attend professional seminars and conferences.
Collaborate with colleagues to share knowledge.
Use a variety of sources to complement your subject matter.
Engage students in higher order thinking.
Address student gaps in knowledge, and meet the needs of students at different levels of achievement.
ENCOURAGEMENT To create an innate motivation by giving interesting projects and letting students choose.
Give interesting projects where they will have to work in teams, to choose and to make decisions.
Have children decide which theme they want to work with.
Create an innate motivation by giving appropriate skills.
Demonstrate the activity they are going to do by modeling.
INSPIRATION
To give positive influence, have well ordered classrooms, be prepared, and do dynamic lecturing.
Be more creative.
Engage students through discussion, active learning, hands-on activities, cooperative groups.
Give a purpose to learning.
Be a learner with your students.
Let students feel free to speak.
PASSION
To organize, focus and really put your heart on what you teach
Brainstorm creative ways to present any material. Constantly pay attention to life around you and think of innovative ways to incorporate it to the classroom.
Present material that any type of learner *audio, visual, kinesthetic/tactual- can comprehend.
Make the subject interesting.
Have students apply their own creative talents to the subject matter *don*t be afraid to use art, music or video in an English, math, science or social studies classroom. This will create positive self-esteem, self-concept and interest when students demonstrate their talents.
Be willing to take risks. Try new innovative techniques. You only fail when you don*t try something new.
Invite parents and administration to the classroom to evoke their passions in your subject as well.
You are a model. BE POSITIVE. BE FUN . LOVE WHAT YOU DO!
TEAMWORK To create a support network; to share and communicate
Share ideas about teaching and learning with your colleagues.
Listen and be open to others' viewpoints, acknowledge your assumptions, and respect differences.
Create a strong support network with fellow teachers, administrators, parents, and students by involving them, and becoming involved, in common endeavors.
DISCIPLINE To provide consistent training that develops self-control, character, orderliness and efficiency
Give them freedom to choose among limited options (to develop critical thinking).
Demonstrate consistency (children feel secure knowing what to expect).
We are not buddies, we can be friends, guides and mentors (children need the guidance and safety of boundaries).
Students should be aware of the consequences of their actions.
Listen (it will lead to fairness and students will feel respected).
Allow students to disagree (respectful discussions lead to future leaders).
Encourage positive behavior (an occasional pat in the back helps build self-esteem).
Exhibit self-control (be an example)
Be flexible within reason (take advantage of spontaneous situations to teach life lessons).
Teaching discipline will give the child the necessary tools to behave in a civilized fashion to meet the demands of our society.
