Environmental Club students Prepare an Organic Garden from Around the World
On Saturday, February 13, the Environmental club with the guidance of its advisor, Laura de Celis (teacher) and Mrs. Julie La Goy (PTO); also accompanied by members of the faculty, PTO members, students and parents, began working on our new goal: the Around the World Garden.
This garden consists of 4 smaller gardens with crops from different parts of the world, such as: Africa, Puerto Rico, America and Eurasia. From the different geographic areas corn, sugar cane, aloe, pineapple, beans, yam, sweet potato, lemongrass, amongst other will be grown. The idea is to instill in the students a sense of responsibility and awareness towards the environment as a consequence of witnessing the fruits of their labors.
Professional agronomists Ramon Agosto and Mariel Rivera educated and supervised the students as they prepared the soil and planted the seeds for the first Baldwin School organic garden. In time, these plots will grow to become a beautiful and useful showcase of exotic and indigenous plants. Students like Randy Rivero (10th grade) who attended the seminar said: "It was just great. I know we will all benefit from this, plus it was fun to shovel the dirt and plant the seeds." Stefano Steenbakkers (9th grade) also helped, and said: "Wow, this is just a great thing, it’s fun and everyone will work hard on this." As you can see, the students already feel a sense of accomplishment at the thought of cultivating their own crops for the benefit of everyone at Baldwin.
Undoubtedly, this pilot project can be a precedent for future organic gardens around the Baldwin grounds. Our 23 acre green campus provides the perfect conditions for endeavors like these to become a reality and serve as an example for other communities to not only be advocates for the environment, but also be a motivational factor to lead healthier lives.
