Baldwin School won Third Place among the top twenty-five schools of Puerto Rico at the State MATHCOUNTS competition held at the Universidad Politécnica in Hato Rey on March 8. Malika Flanagan won Third Place in the individual competition out of 150 students. Congratulations to team members Malika Flanagan, Marcos Pertierra, Itamar Aron, and Franchesca Johnson and the alternates Carolina Portela, Emilia Alvarez , Syra Ortiz-Blanes, and Ramiro Santana.
Malika Flanagan will be representing Puerto Rico as a member of the “State” Team at the National MATHCOUNTS competition in Denver , CO in May. The four member team from Puerto Rico will compete with 56 other teams. In addition, the highest number of points in Puerto Rico on the recent American Mathematics Contest 8th grade level test was obtained by Malika.
High School
The High School Math Club has had some amazing successes recently as well, winning First Place at the competitions at Academia San Jose and at Robinson School and Third Place , out of 23 high school teams, at the Baldwin Math Bowl on March 7. Congratulations to Alan Wagner, Manav Ghai, and Jose Pertierra!
Alan Wagner and Manav Ghai were selected by the Mathematical Association of America, based on their score in the American Mathematics Contest, to take an additional test, the AIME, on March 18. Students in the top 5% of all national American Mathematics Contest (AMC 12) participants or students who score at least 100 points out of 150 on the AMC 12 are selected to take the AIME test. The AIME leads to participation in the USA Mathematical Olympiad.
Alan Wagner also scored in the top 1% nationwide of the American Mathematics Contest 10 making him the student with the highest number of points in Puerto Rico in this competition. Congratulations Alan!
Olimpiada de Matemáticas de Puerto Rico
Congratulations to Marcos Pertierra (7 th), Malika Flanagan (8 th), Alan Wagner (10 th), and Katja Torres (11 th)! They were selected, based on the test they took on Sat. Jan. 26 in Mayaguez , to participate in the Olimpiada de Matematica de PR 2008 which was held on Sat. March 29, 2008 . This selection means that they passed the first phase and second phase. The first phase was a test they could get on-line and had to send in by mail to UPR Mayaguez. 1,118 of the 5,068 students who took this written test were then selected to go to Mayaguez and take a second test. The students who obtained the highest scores on the second test, the top 15% of those taking the test, which at Baldwin were Marcos, Malika, Alan, and Katja, then had the opportunity to participate in three special classes for mathematically talented students and in the Olimpiada de Matemáticas de Puerto Rico. During April, we will know the scores from this last phase test which determine the students that can attend a summer camp for talented math students and the teams which will represent PR in the Olimpiada Matemática in Honduras , the Olimpiada Matemática in Brasil, and the prestigious annual International Olimpiada Matemática in Spain.
At the award ceremony during the Olimpiada de Matemáticas de Puerto Rico 2008, Malika Flanagan received the 8 th grade level Bronze medal and Alan Wagner received the 10 th grade level Gold medal for their scores on the second phase test.
A huge thank-you and congratulations must be expressed to Nora Nido who has spent countless hours coaching our Math Club members. Nora Nido and Carola Murray were both recognized and honored at our recent Baldwin School Math Bowl which was organized and run by the five incredible teachers in our MS/HS Math Department. We honor Nora and Carola for their enduring efforts over the years to promote mathematical learning at Baldwin School . They have challenged and inspired many students to be truly excited about participating in mathematical endeavors. What a joy to be a witness to the fruits of their labors!
