Baldwin School Oxman Center recently celebrated its yearly art show in which our youngest artists expressed through paintings, drawings and sculptures made with recyclable materials, their ideas based on the study of the works of Puerto Rican artist Nick Quijano.
As it is customary every year the children study and work closely with a Puerto Rican artist, and all the activities in the art room are developed using the artist’s work as inspiration. The love of nature, Puerto Rican traditions, toys, and even the importance of recycling found in Nick Quijano’s work was the starting point for the children.
The children welcomed the artist who spoke to them about his work and demonstrated painting techniques using several different brushes that included even an old shaving soap brush. “Nicky” as our children call him, made several sketches while explaining to the children and answering their questions at the same time.
In appreciation for Nick Quijano’s friendship and support the Oxman Center faculty narrated a story called, “The Treasures from the Sea”. The story written by Ms. Socorrito Díaz, Baldwin’s Elementary Art teacher, and illustrated by the Baldwin students was given as a gift to the artist. The story related Nicky’s childhood adventures at “ Cascajo Beach” where he searched for materials for his art pieces.
The Oxman Center Mural keeps growing and Ms. Maicha showed the parents this year’s addition. For the past years, the students have been working with ceramist, Sylvia Blanco, who has become a very important part of our art program.
It was a day of celebration in which the imagination, creativity and the children’s joyful hearts demonstrated once again that Art is a necessary and important tool to enrich our lives.
