12: A Night Commute for the Children of Uganda Part 2, A Closure
Last year the NHS lead by Natalia O’Neill decided to make a difference for the Children of Uganda. Starting without a determined plan, the walkathon ended being a success, collecting approximately of $30,000.00. This year the NHS repeated wonderful experience in the hope of helping the children of Uganda furthermore.
Even though there were some difficulties with the downpour of rain, we were able to make this event one that will be remembered throughout the years by everyone who attended. Over 800 people attended this time and we were able to collect $42,300.15. Students from CPN, St. John’s, Robinson, Perpetuo Socorro, San Ignacio, Maria Reina, American Military Academy, Marista, Commonwealth, and Baldwin School attended the event which was prepared with anticipation by the NHS with the help of the Student Council and all of our sponsors.
The goal of the NHS was to raise awareness for people in Puerto Rico, educate people about the event, and about the fact that any type of contribution to aid a cause makes a real difference in this world. The NHS really desired people to feel that they were able to make a difference in this world, no matter how small the contribution or the action, the NHS wanted to demonstrate that the desire of one person can evolve into a project like the one initiated by Natalia O’Neill. We were able to achieve this! The projected goal was $35,000.00, and we exceeded our expectations by over $5,000.00.
Walking in the rain, students demonstrated their enthusiasm and their contribution to this great project. Starting at 10:00 a.m., the NHS members put the finishing details on the event. Working against the rain, dividing the soccer field, preparing every single detail that was needed to be finished, the NHS was able to accomplish our so desired goal.
The gates opened at 3:00 p.m., since the beginning, the massive amounts of students arriving demonstrated the great attendance and need for efficiency and work in order to accomplish a secure environment in the school. By the end of the registration, we were able to notice the great attendance and the success of this event
We were able to accomplish our goals and with this we close our project of 12: A Night Commute for the Children of Uganda Part 2. We accomplished what Martin Luther King said: “Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
