Wellness Program

Wellness is a priority at Baldwin, both for the students who attend school and for the teachers and staff who support them. The staff Wellness Program is designed to promote a healthy environment for Baldwin Employees. We value working in a healthy atmosphere and believe that extending healthy habits into the workplace can prevent serious illness and enhance the quality of work life.

This school year the Wellness Program Newsletter will be focus on survival techniques for an emergency in the Classroom and first aid techniques.

From 365 days that has a year, students, teachers and school workers spend about 190 in the school, approximately from 6 to 8 hours each day. This fact allows us to infer that the probabilities that an emergency occurs during school hours are high. The school has the moral and legal obligation to be able to respond to all serious adverse events that threaten the health, safety, or well-being of the school population. Teachers concern is the students. The school delegates on them the responsibility of the student’s safety and well- being. Therefore, teachers need to be able to take care of their students at any time or circumstance during the school hours.

The purpose of these Newsletters is to assist our teachers to make our school safer, and to give the skills they will need to take appropriate course of action should an emergency arise.

We will be talking about these important issues:

  • What to do during different kind of emergencies
  • First Aid techniques
  • Fundamentals of Basic Life Support

August Newsletter is a reminder on how to prevent and control the infectious diseases in school. The Newsletter of September compiles a summary of what a teacher must do before, during and after an emergency. The next months we will be talking about earthquakes, fire safety, how to survive to a school shooting, and shelter in place. Next semester we will focus on first aid techniques and fundamentals of basic life support.

Be advised that I am available to answer any question you may have about these issues and to give demonstrations of any of the survival or first aid techniques. The guidelines and the demonstrations are meant to serve as a basic “what to do in an emergency” information for school staff without medical/nursing training. It is recommended that staff that is in position to provide first aid to students complete an approved first aid and CPR course.

ll the information about emergencies management and first aid techniques is accurate. The references used were the American Red Cross resource document, Masters of Disaster2007, which is available at the following website: http://www.redcross.org/disaster/masters, Perspectives on Health by Getchel, Pippin and Varnes (2000) for the topic offirst aidtechniques, and the American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR(2006).
