my name is Jeff Penn and I need extended essay coordinator at Baldwin School of Puerto Rico I'd like to take a few minutes to share with you what makes essay is all about and how this process is going to work at Baldwin  everything in the IB starts here with the learner profile is all about developing lifelong Learners who embody these 10 traits  take a moment to read over them they're important there what your child going to the commas results of spending two years in this Challenge and college preparatory program  let me look at the model for the we see a few things first International mind in this encircles the program six subject areas and at the very heart of it is the learner profile that we looked at the learner that we're aiming to help your child become next to the learner profile it's a key part of the process of developing the learner profile traits and teaching your children to be lifelong Learners ultimately is it bad asking questions  take a moment watch the short video and when we're finished I'm going to ask you to think about it by the year 2050 is estimated the world will double the energy we use today any questions avenging foodfight reduce the sunlight energy into my tablet what if we make a car that can Power by sunlight but then what if they wanted to travel by night time has the government actually full about implementing some kind of energy text I the end of the video  why do we grow up fast why don't we ask more the same questions and says we need children and students who are going to ask more not we're going to be curious not settle  ultimately we need to produce lifelong Learners so make a moment's pause the video and talk to your neighbor or calling your friend that you're watching this video with to talk about and think about what is a lifelong go ahead really pause the video  hopefully now you've unpause the video and had chance to discuss with your friend what lifelong Learners are let me share with you what I think a lifelong learner is I think the life one winter is somebody who is it's somebody who knows the value of asking questions isn't afraid to ask them someone who's equipped to find the answers to those questions and then how to and is willing to share those answers with others so how do we teach children to be curious ask questions fine answers to those questions Sheridan  by teaching them the research process and in the IB program that's done to the extended essay that before we get into details about this let's talk about what the extended essay is not extended essay is not an exercise then picises the product unfortunately products play students are used to producing education students is what they hand in play others of learn to just thrash out something in a long all-nighter before it's due and then both projects are judged because our emphasis has been on the product if you were sitting here in my presence I would probably say I can tell by the look on your face that smirk that smile that laughter that you know exactly what I'm talking about because every one of us is probably pulled an all-nighter and turn something in that we did not engage in we just did it to do it but extended essay is not about that extended essay emphasizes the process because process really matters it's the process the pursuit of the product that teaches those traits of curiosity questioning answers  Indulgence for a moment as we talked about this issue a process assume that you ask your son or daughter to drive down the road to the store to get a gallon of milk you probably don't even think about the process entail in that so I won't you just picture for a moment. processed telling your child to go to the store and then I'm going to the store and getting that gallon of milk take a moment to visualize I'm guessing that your process did not look like this one Google take a picture how many can all agree that based on that process definitely matters  are more serious note process May 28th 1986 when NASA astronauts died  somebody didn't follow all the steps in the process tragedy resulted  process matters so what is process that we're talking about is the process of questions about which we are curious searching for those answers and then reporting on what we find the research process different Pathways depending on the question the person asking the question and what you find along the way but ultimately don't end up at the same place and that place is the product a 4000 word essay I know that's probably something that you don't have a visualization on so let me show you just 1/4 when words looks like reduced to 5.5 and placed on a single PowerPoint slide 4000 words looks like spread over 42 pages with a who played the table of contents appendices ultimately ends up being 12 to 20 double-spaced pages of writing in 12 point font  the process of the estimated to take approximately 40 hours worth of work on your child's part and some extra time talking to their supervisor which we will get to in a moment in subject can be taken from any of the six subjects that your child is studying as part of his or her IV ploma  the last a year begins in January of their first diploma which point they are introduced to the process they begin developing a plan add a research question may continue the process to summer break during which they write their first rap they turn that in at the beginning of their second year when it is reviewed by the supervisor revised and finalized before December of their second diploma here on all year long process along the way it's important to mention by the way that your child is expected to write their draft over the summer vacation possible if they get really excited about it and and in the house a few problems on the way they can get that done before the break that most IB students to spend a chunk their summer break doing the writing which is due the first week back  the child will have a supervisor going to them from the subject area in which they're researching will be allowed by ID requirements to spend a maximum of five hours with that supervisor next time is allotted with three mandatory Reflections that take approximately an hour and a half total most of this what is spin actually developing the research questions self and then reviewing the first draft and with a few about an hour left over for other questions so that what time is pretty tight and that's intentional we want this to be the IP once it's to be a reflection of your child's ability to conduct independent research we will also provide training during an extended essay advisory. That will happen from time to time they will be given introduced to the is platform that we use a Baldwin called doodle tools to organize their essay and the research that they can share them with the supervisor in with me when they have the library in all of its resources at their disposal as well  if you have questions about this process please don't you owe me a pen at Baldwin School. School that work I'll be happy to answer any of your questions because we want you to feel calm will this process big help along the way support and encouragement and ultimately known value of this process address that from a personal standpoint the whole idea process mattering in the nnn this whole adventure of the research process play is it reminds me of mountain climbing last summer my wife and I have the opportunity to travel to Norway and visit some friends who set up to take you to this place called stop Old English photos sure why not  the only got there we saw the sign that lays out that we would travel it also shows you exactly how difficult certain aspects of a hike are we didn't really know what we are in for so we begin here we are at the beginning of our trip you can even see behind us that lovely little map shows what we were in for but we were all smiles little did we know that the journey would entail black flies this is not me but this is another individual who do not follow advice about using bug spray and was eaten alive by the black flies he was rather treacherous part of the trip that was a vertical climb that we had to actually is little scary along the way and then there was a couple next to West we were engaged heated argument in the wife was quite distressed about about find I must say to my wife handled handled it quite well it was painful it was scary it was difficult but at the end we were rewarded with this fantastic View perspective on things and a sense of incredible accomplishment we'd read somewhere that many people don't and we were able to see things that many people don't get it let's see this is exactly what the extended essay does for your children it's a difficult process it can be painful they may be tears but if follow it to the end it's not only very possible it's very necessary part of our existences as people on warbeck lifelong Learners from your wife if we hadn't done this adventure in Norway we probably would never have attempted this adventure in Peru and November which also rewarded with next time spectacular reviews on it many people don't get to see it was a difficult absolutely it was but when we allow our curiosity to drive us push yourselves Beyond up receive limits we achieve amazing things this is what we're trying to do with your children this is what the extended essay will do cast of becoming lifelong Learners thank you for your time and remember if you have any questions to email me at J pen at Baldwin school.org thank you
