As part of their unit Sharing the planet, PPK Rainbow has been learning about places and roles in the community. They had the pleasure of receiving visits from different citizens that taught them about their role and importance in the community.

  • Pediatric Orthopedist, Dr. Lissette Salgueiro (Suri's mom): She talked about the human body's bones and how to take care of them. She mentioned that vitamins, calcium and healthy foods are important. Dr. Salgueiro also explained how x-rays work and what she does to help patients get better. Afterward, she did a demonstration on how she places the cast on patients with some volunteer students, they were very courageous. It was a very enriching experience!
  • Agronomist, Mr. Luis Sierra: He talked about the importance and benefits of planting our own crops. Mr. Sierra explained some projects he has been working on building vegetable patches in different systems of the community in Puerto Rico. He also brought some plants for students to see and smell such as: "pimiento", "recao" and "cilantrillo". Finally, students had the opportunity to plant a seed with Mr. Sierra's guidance. Great visit!
  • Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Carolina Thomas (virtual visit): She talked about what a visit to the dentist looks like, the tools that they use, and their purpose. Dr. Thomas explained the importance of brushing our teeth and flossing. She even taught us a song to use when brushing our teeth. Afterward, students had the opportunity to talk about the toothbrush and toothpaste they use to brush their teeth at home. Later on, they practiced how to brush their teeth using Dr. Thomas' song. So fun!
  • Pilot, Capt. Manuel Montalvo Commu (Ivanna's uncle and Baldwin Alumn '12): He talked about how he developed his passion for airplanes when he was a little boy. Capt. Miranda explained his role in the community; talked about his uniform, preparation, and how airplanes work. He also emphasized the importance of safety and brought a toy airplane for students to see the parts of the aircraft. He is an important citizen that helps others travel and move around the world. Such an unforgettable experience!
  • Clinical Research Specialist, Dr. Carmen Deseda (Siena's mom and Baldwin Alumna '00) - She talked about the importance of hygiene and how to avoid germs that make us sick. Dr. Deseda explained her role; in her company, medicines are developed to eliminate viruses that can affect the human body. Later on, students wore scientists' white robes and glasses to work on a fun chemical reaction. Scientists are amazing!
  • Police, Officer Méndez - He talked about his role in the community and how they help us stay safe. Students had the opportunity of seeing and even sit inside two police cars. They were shown where to press to hear the sirens and how to talk on the car's microphones. What a unique experience!
  • Pro Golfer, Mr. Rafael Campos (Valentina's uncle and Baldwin Alumn '06) - He started talking about what is golf, the equipment they use, and the role of the caddie. Mr. Rafa Campos and his sister Cristina '06 (Valentina's mom) explained the importance of the player and the caddie's teamwork when playing golf. They mentioned several IB learner profiles that are important when being a golf player. Mr. Campos talked about being principled and caring. He also talked about the importance of eating healthy, warming up before a workout, and staying active. Mr. Campos explained the important role he has as a Puerto Rican citizen representing the island all around the world. Finally, students played some mini golf in super cool putts with Mr. Campos' guidance. It was a wonderful experience!
