Preschool Program at The Baldwin School of Puerto Rico

Spotlight on Learning

The Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta project evaluates specific knowledge and skills that Baldwin's Physics students have acquired throughout the year, including: Archimedes' Principle, fluid density, scale design and modeling, buoyant forces, and behavior of fluids.

Each group applies these principles to construct a cardboard boat that will be able to hold a team of 2 students and race the length of the Baldwin pool and back. The students choose creative themes for their boats and create costumes that also represent the chosen theme.

Many classes from both Elementary and Middle/Upper schools come out to join the fun, see the artistic boats, and find out who wins the awards for categories such as "I Can't Believe It Floats", "Most Creative", and  the "Titanic Award”. A great time is had by all!

This year’s fastest boat (winner) was El Clasico a Soccer Madrid/Barcelona themed boat, and received the coveted "Speedy Gonzalez" Award. Its crew and creators were Hector Laffitte (11th grade Conceptual Physics) and Javier Deya (12th grade Honors Physics).

Thank you to our Honors Physics teacher, Tere Ledesma and Conceptual Physics teacher, Tamara Gonzalez for bringing us this unique and entertaining event each spring!
