In May 2014, a group of Baldwin 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders participated in an annual art contest sponsored by the China Association of Children’s Art. The theme was The Past, Present, and Future of the Silk Route. This is the first time Puerto Rico has participated in this contest.
It was also the first time the students worked in big paper format and they worked extra hours to finish on time. The theme suggested the exchange of products, art, traditions, and inventions between Asia and America through the rough and difficult Silk Route. We gave a different twist to the theme by introducing the idea that when the Silk Route closed, and new products from America were brought to Europe and Asia, we all became part of the Silk Route.
Through the process, we learned about history, geography, cultural exchange. We also learned new art techniques that Uncle Andy taught us about through Skype. When the work was sent to China, we all were very happy with the beautiful colors and the original ideas by the students. These art works will be exhibited in a yearlong traveling exhibition through different cities of China, Russia, and Japan.
We are excited to announce that we have just received a list of winners and beautiful certificates for this contest. We won 9 Gold, 12 Silver, and 17 Copper awards! - And 1 Director award!
Congratulations to all the winners and to all the participants!
