IB Learners are Open – Minded

This week, 12th grader Nancy Pertierra led a presentation called "CHARACTERS UNITE: I WON’T STAND FOR…. " Nancy worked alongside her classmates, Mrs. Ledesma, and Dr. Del Llano to put together a series of videos that allowed the audience to relate to several types of intolerance, including: racism, sexism, religious intolerance, sexual assault, domestic violence, homophobia, ageism, and ableism. Nancy explained the meaning of these words; and shared some interesting statistics previous to each video, all of which touched our emotions, both with smiles and tears.

Throughout the day, over 50 students and teachers participated by wearing "I WON’T STAND FOR ____________" t-shirts which they personalized by writing in the discriminatory behavior that they will not stand for. At the end of the presentation, audience members were also invited to share what it is that they won’t stand for.

Many of Baldwin’s town hall meetings and assemblies embrace aspects of IB Learner Profile. This week’s assembly did so in many ways:

Open-minded - by promoting the understanding and appreciation of differences among people.

Caring – by giving examples of how to show compassion for others.

Courageous – by participants using personalized t-shirts to stand up for what they believe in.
