On April 22nd, 5th graders Noel José Pérez and Alberto Colón, along with 8th graders Beatriz Canals and Mariola Busquets, represented Baldwin School in accepting the 2nd place prize of $5,000 at the Hugo Neu Material Recovery Facility in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
As you may know, Baldwin School has been participating in the Earth Recycling Challenge since October 2014. This competition included 8 other private schools in Guaynabo. Throughout the year, the school collected recycling in the mornings from parents, scheduled special pick-ups for large appliances, and held two electronics/appliances drives. The dedication from the students, parents, faculty, and maintenance staff has been truly inspiring and helped us achieve our goal of being in one of the top three schools in the competition. Collectively, all 9 schools recycled over 100 tons of materials! That's equivalent to the weight of 22 elephants or a Boeing 757-200!
Even though the competition is over, we will still be recycling on campus. If your neighborhood does not recycle, please continue bringing it in to school. We plan to have another electronics/small appliances drive in the fall of 2015 and spring of 2016. Our ultimate goal is to have this biannual collection every year in hopes that people will hear of our collection and spread the word.
Again, thank you for your support and dedication! We couldn't have done it without you!
