As you may know, the influenza season is at its peak. The number of people getting sick with this contagious respiratory illness is increasing every day. This condition is caused by different viruses that infect nose, throat and lungs. Symptoms may include moderate to high fever, headache, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, body aches, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea. These viruses are transmitted from person to person.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that the best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated. They also recommended the following measures to stop the spread of flu germs:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick and when you are sick keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
- Stay home from work and school when you or your child are sick.
- Teach your child to cover the mouth and nose with tissue when coughing or sneezing or, with the upper sleeve if a tissue is not available.
- Teach your child to clean the hands with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand rub.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school.
- Get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of liquids.
- Teach your child not to share personal items like drinks, food, and jackets.
To reduce the spread of influenza on our campus we will be sending home any child who shows symptoms of the virus or has a fever while at school. If your child has influenza he/she must stay at home for at least 72 hours (3 days) or until symptoms disappear, especially fever and cough or as directed by the child’s physician.
