welcome back I'm Christina Castillo the middle years program coordinator here Baldwin and today I'm going to be talking a little bit more about assessment in the middle years program so what is assessment assessment is the process for Gathering and interpreting information that accurately reflects a cheap mint of learning goals and outcomes and we use it as teachers to communicate about a student process in progress with our students parents and staff assessment guys are planning an instruction or we ensure that we make assessment appropriately frequent ongoing varied and continuous in both formal and informal way assessment in the nyp works as follows each subject area in the middle years program you or assessment criteria to assess the students work and assigning Grey's those four assessment criteria are identified as a b c and d are given throughout the unit that are meant to provide meaningful feedback on their learning as well as prepare them for the summative assessment summative assessments are that the combination of the unit and are generally worked on throughout the unit and mighty grades do not average instead teachers reports since most consistent level of achievement and myp assessments do not use points instead students are assessed using a shipment levels 1 through 8 so I'm going to give you some examples of of the way assessment Works in practice as I said each unit begins with a statement of angry the statement of inquiry guys the unit acts as a central idea that students will investigate here's a sample for my Puerto Rican history class of a statement of inquiry for the first unit it says interdependence of systems may affect the resources and sustainability of natural and human Landscapes now the content and the topic of this particular unit is the geography of the notice how the statement of inquiry does not content because it's supposed to be a conceptual understanding the students will arrive at throughout the process of the unit and the inquiry into the content the summative assessment of the unit is usually authentic and the real world situation unless it's an exam it's distributed early in the unit and so students will receive a description of the task and the rubric with with how the task will be assessed then we'll prepare for the summit of us send over the course of the unit through teaching and facilitation but also using the rubric as a road map once the student has submitted there were the teacher assigns a 1 through 8 achieve an example of a summative assessment from my Puerto Rican history class related to the statement of angry that I showed you earlier take into consideration one of the following environmental issues we face in deforestation land and water can a nation soil erosion and waste disposal choose one and write a research paper the demonstrates how the interdependence of systems may affect the resources and sustainability of natural and human landscape that's wording from the statement of inquiry investigate about its origin the systems that interacted throughout time how it has been impacted why is it a problem and what possible solutions might be implemented videos of the students received this description of the summative assessment task at the beginning of the unit so they know what they're going to be working on throughout the years sample formative assessments that are related to this particular summative assessment include for example the action plan that's the first summit formative assessment that my students will be working on after that they'll be working on their research question in their thesis statement next they'll be doing annotated bibliography and then they're going to be on the first draft of the research paper and the reflection now noticed that after each of these formative assessment is submitted I will as a teacher I will give feedback to the student so that they can continue to improve as they work their way to work the criteria for individuals and societies are Criterion a knowing and understanding and this generally relates to content Criterion be investigating which is really that search process Criterion C communicating which is more about the writing process and Criterion D thinking critically which is kind of where we bring it all together this is one example rubric that my students receive in the case of of this particular summative assessment so I'd like you to pull your attention to the level 7-8 this is a description of what students need to achieve in order to get that level of assigned to their work Bethesda student formulates a clear and focused research question that was one of the formative assessment then it says the student formulation effectively follows a comprehensive action plan that was part of the formative I am asking them to do collect and record appropriate averion relevant information that's related to the featured in the rubric that they're going to be the guide their process the steps in which things occur in the classroom are the students received the assessment task in the assessment criteria or the rubric by which it will be assessed or graded students complete the using the rubric to guide their process the teacher then after the student has submitted the work raise the asylum assignment and students receive feedback based on the assessment on a scale of 1 through 8 this process is repeated throughout the year so that all Criterion in each subject that's a b c and d are covered or assessed at least twice in the year and at the end of the semester each teacher analyze the students grades and award a level of achievement for each individual Criterion using the students achievement the criteria levels in each subject are then added together to give a Criterion total for that stuff this total has been converted to an overall achievement grade out of 7 using the grade boundary tables determined by IV so each class will also have an assessment policy students will hear about in the beginning of the school year they will hear from their teachers about the types of Assessments they can expect in any particular class this is the conversion table that we use in order to determine final grade for any given pseudonym any given class the Criterion total this part is the sum of what the student got in each of the four criteria so if the student achieved an eighth each of their criteria for my Puerto Rican history class noticed how it's a range of 28 to 32 and that is converted to a number between 7 and you can also see what that converts into in terms of letter grade and then GTA V conversion table is found in the student handbook students in the NYPD which is in grey 6 through 10 must earn an overall achievement grade that's the number between 1 and 7 3 or above in order to pass a course students failing a course may be required to attend summer school students on academic probation for two semesters will be required to take summer school well and students that fail 3 course is may not be promoted to the next grade and will likely be required to repeat the grade report cards are issued electronically and through veracross to students and parents twice a year that's in January and in June and students in the nyp will be evaluated based on their grade point average your GPA according to the overall achievement grade which is the oag on a scale from 0 to 7 so in order for students to achieve standard honor roll their GPA has to be 3.5 or above and this is for all of their classes as an average of all of their classes and in order to achieve a of 3.7 or above apply for high honor roll any student with an oag of one or two is ineligible for the honor roll here's a sample report card see how the course is written on the left and then the student has received is the criteria grade which is converted into that number between 1 and 7 and this is semester 1 and this is semester 2 helpful tips
